Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain

چکیده
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is a collective term for a number of pathologic conditions of the masticatory system. Their symptomatology is diverse, with orofacial pain being one of the most common symptoms which causes a particular discomfort to the patients. Often, TMDs have a very clear etiology, but sometimes it is completely unknown. They are related to different etiologic factors and comorbid conditions, which aggravates precise diagnostics. This pathology requires team work and a multidisciplinary approach, timely detection of causes and a meticulous selection of treatment procedures, particularly for management of orofacial pain, which can be very demanding in terms of differential diagnostics. There are certain facts which are still unclear; hence notable improvements in approaching this issue are expected. The existing diagnostic classification should be changed and primarily based on etiology instead of symptomatology, which is the current tendency. Also, uniform diagnostic guidelines as well as treatment protocols should be established and that would enhance a multidisciplinary collaboration, which is essential while dealing with this kind of pathology. Special attention should be paid to the development of preventive measures based on scientific evidence that is still neglected.

Orofacial pain management: current perspectives
Some of the most prevalent and debilitating pain conditions arise from the structures innervated by the trigeminal system (head, face, masticatory musculature, temporomandibular joint and associated structures). Orofacial pain (OFP) can arise from different regions and etiologies. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the most prevalent orofacial pain conditions for which patients seek treatmen...

Head and orofacial pain originates from dental, neurologic, musculoskeletal, otolaryngologic, vascular, metaplastic, or infectious disease. It is treated by many health care practitioners, such as dentists, oral surgeons, and physicians. The article focuses on the nonpathologic involvement of the musculoskeletal system as a source of head and orofacial pain. The areas of the musculoskeletal sys...

UNLABELLED Temporomandibular disorders are a set of musculoskeletal dysfunctions within the masticatory system, with multiple etiologies. OBJECTIVE Since craniocervical dystonia can involve the same neuromuscular structure as the temporomandibular joint, we sought to assess the correlation between temporomandibular disorders and craniocervical dystonia. METHOD We applied the Research Diagno...

There are currently four main pain classification systems relevant to orofacial pain (OFP): the International Association for the Study of Pain, International Classification of Headache Disorders, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. Of the four, the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders is the most b...

Aim: To investigate the efficacy of different wavelengths of low level laser therapy (LLLT) in the management of orofacial pain by measuring the pain reduction using visual analogue scale (VAS). Materials and methods: Study involved 20 patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN), 20 with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and 40 with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). 50 % of the patients in each syndrom...
